During PRISM-LT’s consortium meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, on May 20–21, 2024, short interviews were conducted with project partners to give them the opportunity to share their roles, perspectives, and expertise within the project. Organized by INsociety, these interviews showcased the diversity of experience and knowledge within PRISM-LT, capturing unique insights from key contributors.
David Mark
Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Glasgow, discussed his role in engineering “helper” bacteria that can sense metabolites from stem cells and release growth factors in response. This innovation, he explained, is essential for developing synthetic symbiotic systems for biomedical applications. David also emphasized the value of working within PRISM-LT’s diverse and international team, noting that the variety of skills, backgrounds, and perspectives makes the collaboration particularly rewarding.
Massimo Vassalli
Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Glasgow and PRISM-LT’s Scientific Coordinator, highlighted the project’s scientific approach in integrating bacteria and yeast with stem cells to build complex tissue structures. He explained how his team’s work on bioengineering bone and muscle tissues contributes to creating sustainable 3D bioprinted materials.
Elin Pernevik
Biomaterial Scientist at CELLINK, shared her journey of developing biomaterials for bioprinting and her excitement about the potential of PRISM-LT’s work. She emphasized the importance of using bioprinting to create sustainable cultured meat, which could significantly impact animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Volodymyr Kuzmenko
Principal Scientist at CELLINK, expressed enthusiasm for his team’s work on bio-inks containing helper cells (yeast and bacteria) designed to guide stem cell differentiation. He highlighted the collaborative spirit among PRISM-LT’s partners and noted how this partnership supports the development of 3D tissue models that could have benefit healthcare and biomanufacturing.
