Interview with Manuel Salmerón-Sánchez

Glasgow University partner shares his role, collaborations, and hopes for the EU-funded PRISM-LT project.

Transcript

I’m Manuel Salmerón-Sánchez. I’m part of the Glasgow team in the PRISM-LT project on engineered living materials. Our role in PRISM is to help with the engineering of bacteria that will produce growth factors and cytokines to control a range of cells and biological processes, in particular mesenchymal stromal cells.

We, in PRISM, are focused on two applications: one around the bone marrow and how to develop better models based on engineered living materials, and another application which is around cultivated meat. PRISM is an exciting opportunity to develop novel materials with additional properties, additional functionalities that moreover we want to manufacture using 3D printing of additive manufacturing in collaboration with other partners like CELLINK in the project.

Overall, we hope that PRISM will develop the platform technologies that will support the ecosystem of engineered living materials in Europe, and that will bring new products into this exciting field of medicine and cultivated meat.
